Trip Description

See all of Southern Australia - Melbourne, Great Ocean Road, Adelaide and Kangaroo island. In Melbourne, see historical buildings, beautiful gardens and shopping areas famous for their restaurants and fashion. Walk along the shopping strips of up market Toorak, funky Chapel Street in Prahran or bargain central Bridge Road in Richmond. Be impressed by the beautiful Botanic Gardens as you sit on the banks of the Yarra River. Enjoy an excursion to Phillip Island, also known as wildlife island. Penguins come ashore each evening at dusk from their ocean feeding grounds. The large penguin colony enters the beach in groups and “walk and talk” loudly as they work their way into the dunes where their burrow nests are situated. Spend the next two days exploring the Great Ocean Road - a 243 km stretch of road along the south-eastern coast and one of Australia's great scenic coastline drives. Fly to Adelaide, and discover a charming city full of history. A combination of famous landmarks, beautiful parks, and stunning architecture make Adelaide a lovely place to spend a couple of days. See great views from Montefiore Hill and sample tempting chocolates at Haigh's Chocolates. Absorb the aromas, taste, colour and freshness of Adelaide Central Market. Layer by layer the Market's history, foods & charm will be peeled away & exposed for your enjoyment. Journey through the Barossa Valley, home to traditional music, arts and crafts and, of course, wine. Sample a glass of Shiraz from some of the world's oldest vines, learn about viticulture and discover the acoustic secrets of the Whispering Wall. Take the ferry over to Kangaroo Island and spend two full days exploring the pristine wilderness. Kangaroo Island (or ‘KI' as the locals call it) is also big and surprisingly diverse. If you traverse its 155km length you'll find soaring cliffs, dense forest, towering sand dunes, wetlands and massive arcs of bone white beach. KI is a place that has offered protection to substantial populations of native Australian animals, not to mention a place of beauty and escape. As your time in Adelaide comes to an end you have the option of continuing to travel through the South Pacific, or returning home.

NOTE: Tour does not include domestic airfare, which can be worked into your international ticket. You may also wish to speak to your travel agent about the Australian Air Pass with Qantas.

Itinerary

  • Australia

Australia is the world's smallest continent, and includes Tasmania and other islands. Prior to European settlement in the late 1700s and early 1800s, the Australian mainland was inhabited by around 250 individual nations of indigenous Australians for around 40,000 years. After sporadic visits by fishermen from the north and then European discovery by Dutch explorers in 1606, the eastern half of Australia was later claimed by the British in 1770 and initially settled through penal transportation to the colony of New South Wales. As the population grew and new areas were explored, another five largely self-governing Crown Colonies were established during the 19th century. On 1 January 1901, the six colonies became a federation, and the Commonwealth of Australia was formed. \There are iconic sights "down under" that find their way on most itineraries; Sydney (Opera House, Harbour Bridge), Ayers Rock, the Great Barrier Reef, Melbourne. Other gems include the wild nature of Tasmania, vineyards of Hunter Valley, surfing on the Gold Coast, Adelaide, Darwin ... and more.

  • Adelaide

Adelaide is the capital and most populous city of the Australian state of South Australia, and is the fifth largest city in Australia, with a population of more than 1.1 million. It is a coastal city beside the Southern Ocean. Adelaide is also home to a great number of cultural institutions with many located of the boulevard of North Terrace including the Art Gallery of South Australia, South Australian Museum and State Library of South Australia. The Adelaide Botanic Garden, National Wine Centre and Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute are located nearby in the East End.

  • Kangaroo Island

Kangaroo Island is Australia's third largest island - after Tasmania and Melville Island. It is 112 kilometres southwest of Adelaide at the entrance of Gulf Saint Vincent. At its closest point to the mainland, it is 13 kilometres (8 mi) offshore from Cape Jervis, on the tip of the Fleurieu Peninsula in the state of South Australia. The island is 150 km (93 mi) long and between 900 m (1,000 yd) and 57 km (35 mi) wide, its area covering 4,405 km2 (1,701 sq mi). Its coastline is 540 km long and highest altitude is 307 m (1,010 ft).

  • Lorne

A sparkling jewel along the treasure of the Great Ocean Road, Lorne glistens with the golden sands and cool blue waters of Louttit Bay set against the lush green hinterland of the Otway rainfoest. Given its spectacular scenery and picturesque qualities, there's little doubt why Lorne was the first place to be declared an area of 'Natural Beauty and Special Significance' by the Victorian Government.

  • Melbourne

Melbourne is the second most populous city in Australia, and is located around Port Phillip Bay in the south-east. The city is often referred to as Australia's 'sporting and cultural capital' and it is home to many of the nation's most significant cultural and sporting events and institutions. Melbourne is notable for its mix of Victorian and contemporary architecture, its extensive tram network and Victorian parks and gardens, as well as its diverse, multicultural society.

Dining in Melbourne can be a fabulous experience, especially aboard the fleet of historical trams that have become The Colonial Tramcar Restaurant. These glossy, burgundy restaurants on wheels are the first travelling tramcar restaurants in the world and ensure a delightful innovative approach to dining. As they cruise the scenic streets of Melbourne, you can enjoy the fine cuisine and drink the very best of Australian wines or make a selection from the fully stocked bar. The atmosphere is cosy, the service friendly and the decor as inviting as the colonial period these trams reflect. The Colonial Tramcar Restaurant officially commenced operation in August 1983 and has since become a star attraction and tourist symbol for the city of Melbourne. Dining aboard the Colonial Tramcar Restaurant is not only a culinary delight, but also a trip into a little piece of Victoria's history.

The walk provides the opportunity to see wallabies and a range of bird life in the wild. Penguins come ashore each evening at dusk from their ocean feeding grounds. The large penguin colony enters the beach in groups and “walk and talk” loudly as they work their way into the dunes where their burrow nests are situated. Boardwalks enable you to gain close contact with the penguins in the dune area. Enjoy a fish and chip dinner at the Jetty Restaurant in the township of Cowes at Phillip Island.

  • Collectibles

Australia is famous for its marsupial species that include kangaroos, wombats, wallabies, Tasmanian devils and of course the cuddly koalas. These bear-like animals are found in South Eastern Australia and were given the name "koala" by Aboriginals, a word that means "no drink". The Koala obtains enough moisture from the eucalyptus leaves that it feeds on, a plant that would be indigestible to most other life forms.

  • Culinary Delights

There is much more to Australian barbeques than shrimp. Northern Territory barbeques feature indigenous fare like barramundi, kangaroo, emu, ostrich as well as chicken and lamb grilled on the barbecue with oil and seasoning. Of course an outback barbeque is never complete without billy tea at the end. This is simply tea boiled in a tin container known as a "billy".

  • Historic Moment

The Australian "Slouch" hat, or "Digger" hat, is nearly as old as the Australian fighting man. Originating in the army, it traditionally has a leather chin strap made from rabbit-fur felt or wool felt, and is turned up on the side (originally perhaps to keep out of the way of a lance or rifle). It also helps stay clear of that scorching outback sun!
