Nature's SplendorOur Nature's Splendor trips are about the perfect combination of calibrated luxury with natural beauty; about the intersection between unfettered wanderlust and orchestrated indulgence. The itineraries are based on the simple premise that communing with nature doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to put up with inedible food, undrinkable wine or sleeping on the ground.

Trip Description

Tasmania is an archipelago of more than 300 islands sitting just 240 kilometres (150 miles) south-east of mainland Australia. While Tasmania is part of Australia, it is in many ways quite different. There are more than 1,000 mountain peaks, four mild seasons, more than 40 per cent of the island is protected as national parks and reserves, and it is home to some of the world’s rarest animals. The main Island, which compares in size to West Virginia, the Republic of Ireland or Hokkaido, is home to about 500,000 people. Fly directly into Hobart and spend two full days exploring the surrounding areas. Explore the gardens and galleries of the city by motor-coach before we venture into the village of Richmond as well as Bonorong Wildlife Park. You will also enjoy a day trip to Bruny Island - full of untouched wilderness and ocean coast wildlife. Enjoy morning tea, and the spectacle of massive stark cliffs shaped by forces of nature. Embrace the power of the ocean and look for dolphins as well as enjoy a boat cruise. This extension is a great add-on from main-land Australia and is easily accessible by air.

Itinerary

  • Australia

Australia is the world's smallest continent, and includes Tasmania and other islands. Prior to European settlement in the late 1700s and early 1800s, the Australian mainland was inhabited by around 250 individual nations of indigenous Australians for around 40,000 years. After sporadic visits by fishermen from the north and then European discovery by Dutch explorers in 1606, the eastern half of Australia was later claimed by the British in 1770 and initially settled through penal transportation to the colony of New South Wales. As the population grew and new areas were explored, another five largely self-governing Crown Colonies were established during the 19th century. On 1 January 1901, the six colonies became a federation, and the Commonwealth of Australia was formed. \There are iconic sights "down under" that find their way on most itineraries; Sydney (Opera House, Harbour Bridge), Ayers Rock, the Great Barrier Reef, Melbourne. Other gems include the wild nature of Tasmania, vineyards of Hunter Valley, surfing on the Gold Coast, Adelaide, Darwin ... and more.

  • Hobart

Hobart is the state capital and most populous city of the Australian island state of Tasmania. Founded in 1803 as a penal colony, it is one of Australia's oldest cities and the eleventh most populous, with a greater area population of approximately 205,566 in 2006. The city is the financial and administrative heart of Tasmania, and also serves as the home port for both Australian and French Antarctic operations. The Hobart nightlife primarily revolves around Salamanca Place and the waterfront area, but popular pubs, bars and nightclubs exist around the city as well.

  • Collectibles

Australia is famous for its marsupial species that include kangaroos, wombats, wallabies, Tasmanian devils and of course the cuddly koalas. These bear-like animals are found in South Eastern Australia and were given the name "koala" by Aboriginals, a word that means "no drink". The Koala obtains enough moisture from the eucalyptus leaves that it feeds on, a plant that would be indigestible to most other life forms.

  • Culinary Delights

There is much more to Australian barbeques than shrimp. Northern Territory barbeques feature indigenous fare like barramundi, kangaroo, emu, ostrich as well as chicken and lamb grilled on the barbecue with oil and seasoning. Of course an outback barbeque is never complete without billy tea at the end. This is simply tea boiled in a tin container known as a "billy".

  • Historic Moment

The Australian "Slouch" hat, or "Digger" hat, is nearly as old as the Australian fighting man. Originating in the army, it traditionally has a leather chin strap made from rabbit-fur felt or wool felt, and is turned up on the side (originally perhaps to keep out of the way of a lance or rifle). It also helps stay clear of that scorching outback sun!
