Trip Description

Experience Scandinavia by visiting three of the most important European Capitals. Affectionately known as the 'Daughter of the Baltic', Helsinki sits at the arrowhead of a peninsula, surrounded by an archipelago of 315 islands. Visit the Old city center with an English speaking guide and enjoy peacefully a cruise around the city's lakes. An overnight ferry to Stockholm will take you to one of the most stunning locations in the world. The historical streets and well-preserved buildings of the charming Old Town, the first stop for many visitors, contrast with modern Stockholm where locals live and work.

The following day we suggest a tour of the Drottningholm Palace, residence for Sweden´s Royal family and a UNESCO Site Heritage. Known for the boasting stunning modern architecture, world-class restaurants and cutting edge design, Copenhagen is a wonderful city. Canals, lakes and the sea form the backdrop to modern Copenhagen and are a reminder of the city's heritage as a major Baltic port. Your Grand tour of Copenhagen takes in all of the major sights including the 'Tivoli Gardens', the colourful canal district, the old 'Stock Exchange' and the 'Royal Theatre', amongst others. Spend some time at leisure to explore the city at your own pace. Venture out into the hinterlands on a scenic route with the coastlines of Denmark and Sweden almost side by side and enjoy a shared tour of the beautiful 'Frederiksborg Castle', and the impressive 'Kronborg Castle', setting of Shakespeare's play 'Hamlet'.

Itinerary

  • Denmark

Denmark is a country in the Scandinavian region of northern Europe, and includes constituent states of Greenland and the Faroe Islands. The mainland is bordered to the south by Germany, to the east by the Baltic Sea, and the west the North Sea. The country consists of a large peninsula, Jutland (Jylland) and many islands, most notably Zealand (Sjælland), Funen (Fyn), Vendsyssel-Thy, Lolland, Falster and Bornholm as well as hundreds of minor islands often referred to as the Danish Archipelago. Denmark has long controlled the approach to the Baltic Sea, and these waters are also known as the Danish straits. Denmark is the second-most visited destination in Scandinavia, after Sweden, with 4.7 million visitors in 2007. The capital is Copenhagen, a major regional center of culture, business, media, and science.

  • Copenhagen

Copenhagen is the largest city in Scandinavia and Denmark's capital and displays effortless grace and impeccable Nordic style. A bustling metropolis of 1.1 million, and one of Europe's most enjoyable cities, Copenhagen is situated on the island of Zealand facing the Oresund strait. With Sweden just minutes away by train, it is a link between mainland Europe and Scandinavia, and has a wealth of cultural and entertaining things to see and do. The city has a reputation for tolerance, the fascinating 'free city' of Christiania, a community of people who have tried to create an equal and just consensus-governed democracy for its people. There is more to here than Carlsberg and The Little Mermaid, and a trip to the wonderful Tivoli Gardens will leave the visitor in no doubt that this is a very special city.

  • Finland

Finland is a Nordic country in northern Europe. It borders Sweden to the west, Russia to the east, and Norway to the north. The capital city is Helsinki. Finland was historically part of Sweden and from 1809 an autonomous Grand Duchy within the Russian Empire. Finland's declaration of independence in 1917 from Russia was followed by a civil war, wars against the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany, and a period of official neutrality during the Cold War. Finland joined the United Nations in 1955 and the European Union in 1995.  Commercial cruises between major coastal and port cities in the Baltic region, including Helsinki, Turku, Tallinn, Stockholm and Travemünde, play a significant role in the local tourism industry. There are many churches, cathedrals, museums and castles. Olavinlinna in Savonlinna hosts the annual Savonlinna Opera Festival. The capital city of Helsinki, is famous for its Grand Duchy era architecture, which resembles that of imperial St. Petersburg.

  • Helsinki

Helsinki is the capital and largest city of Finland. It is in the southern part of Finland, on the shore of the Gulf of Finland, by the Baltic Sea. Helsinki is Finland's capital for business, education, research, culture, and government. It has a compact downtown area with some superb museums and public buildings. Finland's main international airline hub, Helsinki-Vantaa airport is 40 minutes from the city center, with direct flights around the world. The busy Helsinki-Tallinn route takes 1.5 hour by sea and 18 minutes by helicopter.

  • Sweden

Sweden is a Nordic country on the Scandinavian Peninsula, that borders Norway to the west, Finland to the northeast, and is connected to Denmark by the Öresund Bridge. Sweden is the third largest country by area in Western Europe, and has a population of over 9.2 million. Sweden emerged as an independent and unified country during the Middle Ages. It joined the Kalmar Union formed in 1397, and received a modern centralized administration beginning with King Gustav Vasa in the 16th century. In the 17th century the country expanded its territories to form the Swedish empire. Most of the conquered territories outside the Scandinavian Peninsula were lost during the 18th and 19th centuries. The eastern half of Sweden, present-day Finland, was lost to Russia in 1809. The last war in which Sweden was directly involved was in 1814, when Sweden by military means forced Norway into a personal union with Sweden, a union which lasted until 1905. Since 1814, Sweden has been at peace, adopting a non-aligned foreign policy in peacetime and neutrality in wartime. Sweden's capital is Stockholm, which is also the largest city in the country.

  • Stockholm

Stockholm is the capital of Sweden. Strikingly pretty, it is arguably one of the most beautiful capital cities in the world. The city is made up of 14 islands connected by some 50 bridges on Lake Malaren, which flows into the Baltic Sea and passes an archipelago with some 24,000 islands and islets). The city is a very lively, cosmopolitan place with both modern Scandinavian architecture including lots of brass and steel, along with fairy tale towers, a captivating Old Town (Gamla Stan) and lots of green space. Over 30% of the city area is made up of waterways and another 30% is made up of parks and green spaces, giving Stockholm perhaps the freshest air and widest lungs of any European capital. Most attractions in Stockholm are found in what Stockholmers call "innerstaden", the inner city - historically the zone within the city tolls. The geography of Stockholm, with its islands and bodies of water, makes for a natural division of the inner city into three major zones. Outside the inner city, the city has a mainly suburban character.
