| Question |
How Do You Want To Travel? |
|
We reached the conclusion some time ago that the "How" of travel is as important as the "Where" (Destination) and the "Why" (Travel Style), and thus we have used the concept of Travel Mode to help segment our trips for our travellers. It's our experience that while some travellers like to sample all modes, others are deeply committed to one particular approach, and would never consider the alternatives. It's just a fact of life that some people get seasick merely by stepping onto a ship, while others never feel alive unless they have the wind in their hair and the smell of salt water in the air. In order to accommodate these different needs and interests, we have developed the three modes of travel identified below: By Land, By Water, and By Rail. |

Our By Land trips focus on building journeys around multiple modes of transportation on land, including everything from 4-wheel-drive jeeps to rickshaws, but the primary means of transportation (in addition to simply walking) tends to be either modern coaches (with the Classic Series) or small vans (with the Exploratory Series).
We also resort to water-based transportation when necessary (often in the form of ferries, hovercrafts, antique junks, riverboats or cruise ships), and many land-based trips involve internal flights on domestic or charter aircraft. The length of the trips varies depending upon the destination and the focus, but we always try to spend 2 to 3 nights in one place so that our travellers can unpack, relax, and soak up a bit of local atmosphere. |

Our By Rail trips focus on building journeys around the old world romance of train travel, whether it's the legendary Orient Express or the less famous (but equally as opulent) Northern Belle. The main focus of the trip is the rail journey portion, but we also add on significant excursions both before and after the train component to add balance and diversity to create an experience that you couldn't otherwise achieve on your own.
We have a number of trips that include a train component in the itinerary, but we have not included them as By Rail trips unless the train component is longer than 2 nights (please call us if you would like details of these other journeys). Since we are Horizon after all, we have chosen not to build trips around mass market or low-end trains, as these trains don't fit our style of travel (and in any event, they can be done more economically on your own). While the by Rail journeys are relatively expensive, we also believe that you get what you pay for when it comes to train travel. |

Our By Water trips focus on building journeys around ships, with itineraries ranging from the classic romance of the Transatlantic crossing to the adventurous spirit of the Amazon River, from the siren call of antiquity in the Mediterranean to the eternal silence of the white continent of Antarctica.
The ships themselves cover an equally broad spectrum, from the many entertaining activities and choices of Princess Cruises to the luxurious appointments and refined dining of the Oceania fleet, from the intimate private yacht experience of the Callisto to the towering stature and grand elegance of the Queen Mary 2. On all of our By Water journeys, we add hand-crafted pre-stays for each cruise (to help you ease into your cruising experience), guided shore excursions (to eliminate the many choices and costs onboard the ship), and of course, the services of our exceptional guides. | |
