Dear Norman,
It may seem paradoxical to speak of "work" and "hardship" within the context of an email promising “indulgence” and “luxury”, but we're the first to admit that our kind of travel isn’t necessarily of the obvious, conventional kind. Our approach to luxury is more about the richness of the experience than the cost of a hotel room, is more about tasting wine from a barrel than sipping it from a crystal goblet, and is more about sleeping under the stars than slipping between 500-thread count sheets (although we’re not averse to that either). We plan our trips on the premise that the most enjoyable comforts are the ones earned by a little sweat upon the brow, that the most piquant meals are the ones we participated in preparing ourselves, and that the most memorable moments are the ones preceded by a spontaneous transition from passively observing to actively participating.
Of course, we also believe that you need a sophisticated, seasoned travel company to create the conditions in which this kind of serendipity can flourish. While it has become extraordinarily easy to find information on any subject these days, it has also become monumentally difficult to find objective, trustworthy advice. Even if you can find objective advice, do you really want to try and orchestrate the theatre of travel on your own, booking hotels sight unseen, planning routes without local knowledge, and giving your Visa number to companies that may not outlast the week? Do you really want to risk spending your precious vacation time fumbling with unreadable maps, banging on the doors of cafes that have already closed, and dragging your suitcases from hotel to hotel in a desperate search for decent lodging? Wouldn’t you rather set off knowing that the route had been thoroughly researched, that a delightful lunch is planned at an undiscovered village bistro, that a basalt stone massage is already booked at your boutique hotel, and that a flute of kir royale and your fellow travellers will be waiting in the bar with tales of adventure at the end of the day?
If this sounds like the kind of experience that you are looking for, then join us on our Luxury Adventures and soon you'll be practicing tai chi at sunrise in the local park and buying Mongolian yurts for your children's sleepovers.

Exploratory Series: If you are over 35, luxury-conscious, spiritually-curious and non group-travel oriented, then our Exploratory Series of escorted and independent trips may be the perfect solution. These trips are designed to immerse travellers in the character of a place, to allow them to slow down, go deep, and participate in something that is authentic, meaningful and real. The itineraries are built with a focus on personal freedom to allow travellers to savour experiences, haggle in the marketplace, linger over meals, lounge around the pool, curl up with a book, and imbibe wine with the locals at the cafe.
Classic Series. If you are over 65, value-conscious, culturally-curious and group travel-oriented, then our Classic Series of escorted trips may be the perfect solution. These trips are designed to transport travellers back to the era of old-world romance and adventure, when doing the "Grand Tour" of Europe was an essential part of a complete education and two weeks at sea was a brief journey. The itineraries are built with a focus on maximizing value to allow travellers to see as many sights as possible at a reasonable pace and in relative comfort without having to worry about the details.
Trip Format:
Our Independent Trips are designed for independent-minded travellers who like to travel on their own, but still want to experience our superbly designed itineraries at reasonable prices (and who don't have the time, inclination or expertise to do all of the planning themselves). The itinerary and prices are always fixed, the departure dates may be flexible or fixed depending on the specific trip, and there is no Horizon guide.
Our Escorted Trips are designed for sociable travellers who want access to our Horizon guides on the ground 24 hours a day so that they can focus on having fun, meeting new people, and getting the most out of their travel experience rather than spending all of their time planning logistics, making choices, or reaching into their wallets. The itinerary, prices and dates are all fixed, and every trip is escorted by a Horizon guide.
Our Private trips are designed for people who already know each other (minimum of 4 travellers), and every aspect of the trip is flexible and custom-tailored to fit their specific tastes. These trips are designed for travellers who know exactly what they want, who appreciate (and are willing to pay for) the craftsmanship that an expert can bring to the challenge, and who value their own time enough not to want to waste it trying to build the trip of a lifetime on their own.
